A celebration of Black History Month at Turtle Creek Elementary

Turtle Creek students honored Black History Month on Thursday with a celebration of empowerment and achievement through songs, videos, and more.

The special assembly was hosted by high school student Sonny Davis, who is president of the Woodland Hills High School Black Student Union. As students and special guests gathered in the auditorium, a video played of Turtle Creek students relaying facts and information about Black historical figures and pop culture icons. Each grade played a part in the festivities, beginning with kindergartners performing the gospel classic “This Little Light of Mine.”

First grade sang the folks song “Traveling in the Wilderness,” which relays brief stories about figures like Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglas, Rosa Parks, and more. Second grade performed Bill Withers’ classic ode to friendship and community, “Lean on Me.”

Third grade performed a Black History Cheer, while fourth grade challenged their fellow students to guess the important historical figure with a quick game of “Who Am I?” The fourth grade chorus later returned for a performance of “Peace Like A River.”

In a nod to the recently completed Olympics, the fifth graders acted out a series of coordinated performances to recognize Black excellence on the world stage. From gymnastics to swimming to speed skating, the students showcased what made each particular athlete shine.

The festivities closed out with five students from the Champs Leadership team reciting a portion of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech, which he delivered in 1963.

Thanks to everyone who helped put together this special event. The students did a fantastic job showcasing how they are empowered by our history!
